How I can help

Therapy and evaluation services for adults

Concerns about mood, health, or thinking rarely affect just one part of life. We can work together to understand what is happening and identify a useful next step. The practice is temporarily closed to new therapy and evaluation inquiries.

Psychotherapy

I work with adults experiencing anxiety or panic, depression, bipolar disorder, chronic pain or illness, sleep difficulties, stress, and major life changes. These concerns can affect relationships, daily activity, mood, and a sense of purpose. Therapy offers a place to understand those connections and develop practical ways to manage distress.

My approach draws on clinical and health psychology, with respect, caring, and human connection at its center. I especially welcome older adults adjusting to changes in health, independence, caregiving, or retirement, and men seeking support with emotional or health concerns.

Dr Howard is not accepting new psychotherapy patients at this time.

Evaluations & screenings

For adults seeking diagnostic clarity or a medical presurgical screening, I offer evaluations designed around the specific question being asked. The goal is a clear explanation of findings and a useful plan for moving forward.

  • Psychological evaluations for concerns such as ADHD, anxiety, depression, or bipolar disorder, with the hope of understanding what’s really going on and finding the right answers.
  • Spinal cord stimulator (SCS) presurgical screenings

Dr Howard is not accepting new evaluation or screening patients at this time.

My approach

Understanding the whole picture

Anxiety, depression, bipolar disorder, chronic pain, illness, and difficult life changes can disrupt sleep, mood, relationships, activity, and a sense of purpose. I help patients understand how these parts of life affect one another, develop practical ways to manage distress, and stay engaged with the people, activities, and values that give life meaning.

Our first therapy session is a relaxed conversation about your concerns, strengths, and goals. I hope you leave feeling heard and respected, with useful information or an initial strategy.

“The goal is to understand what is happening, make sense of the options, and find a way forward that fits your life.”

Clinical care in medical settings

At Cheyenne Regional Medical Group, Dr Howard provided counseling, psychological and cognitive assessment, and presurgical screening in collaboration with medical specialists. His work at Kaiser Permanente and Regional West Medical Center included psychotherapy, behavioral medicine, crisis care, and consultation for outpatient and hospitalized patients.

At North Colorado Medical Center, he supported patients and families across the behavioral health, transitional care, and acute rehabilitation units. He helped establish behavioral health services within medical units and developed an evaluation and support program for the bariatric surgery clinic.

Community mental health and program development

Dr Howard directed child and family services at North Range Behavioral Health, worked in adult intake and crisis services at the Larimer Center for Mental Health, and founded a rural private practice in western Nebraska. These roles involved therapy, assessment, crisis response, consultation, and supervision.

He also supervised outpatient and intensive treatment programs at North Colorado Medical Center, helping develop adult partial hospitalization services and strengthen care for adolescents and families.

Teaching, supervision, and healthcare integration

As an assistant professor and chair of graduate psychology programs at the American School of Professional Psychology at Argosy University in Denver, Dr Howard taught, supervised clinical training, and led faculty and academic programs. He received the school’s Outstanding Faculty of the Year Award.

With Colorado’s Office of Behavioral Health, he contributed to statewide efforts to integrate behavioral and physical health care, including prescribing guidance and educational materials for primary care.

Education and perspective

Dr Howard earned a PhD in counseling psychology from Texas A&M University, an MS in clinical psychopharmacology from the California School of Professional Psychology at Alliant International University, and an MA in counseling from the University of Northern Colorado. He completed his doctoral internship at Ulster County Community Mental Health Services in New York.

His pharmacology training and collaboration with physicians inform his understanding of how physical conditions, medications, mood, cognition, and life circumstances interact. He brings that perspective to psychotherapy and psychological evaluations, with an emphasis on clear explanations and useful next steps.
